Discus are very peaceful, being native to the Amazon river basin in Brazil, they live in harmony with many other varieties of fish. Due to their distinctive shape, calm behavior, stunning bright colors and patterns, discus are popular as freshwater aquarium fish.

They are considered difficult to keep, due to strict requirements for water quality and the need to be kept in groups.  Discus will not dig in substrate so they will not tear up plants.  Being fantastic parents who mate for life, discus will vigorously defend their young, this may make them semi-aggressive.
