The Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus), also known as the gray bichir or Cuvier’s bichir, is a freshwater fish native to Africa, particularly in swamps, marshes, and lagoons. It’s a relatively hardy, nocturnal species with a well-developed sense of smell, which it uses to locate food since it has poor vision. Bichirs are known for their ancient, lungfish-like appearance, the ability to breathe atmospheric oxygen, and their armored scales, which have contributed to their popularity among aquarists.
